The head of the Finnish Foreign Ministry said that she will seek to ban the entry of Russian athletes into the European Union. Russian athletes will not be allowed to enter Finland in 2027 if the war against Ukraine continues, Finnish Foreign Minister Alina Veltonen said. She emphasized that in the coming days she will advance the necessary steps for this. Valtonen also said that in October she proposed to her colleagues from the EU countries to limit the entry of Russian athletes into the Schengen area. According to her, the committee is already working on this issue. In 2027, Finland will host the World Figure Skating Championships and the Women's EuroBasket Games. On October 30, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decided to include Russia in all hockey tournaments of the 2026/27 season. The country was suspended from the competition in 2022 due to the invasion of Ukraine. The Finnish Hockey Association called the court's decision "completely incomprehensible" in the context of the ongoing war. Five Finnish members of the European Parliament have signed a demand to introduce new sanctions and visa restrictions against Russia in order to prevent its hockey teams from returning to world tournaments.
