Two sentences a day. Russian courts set a new record since the days of the Soviet Union in cases of treason and espionage. From July to September, Russian courts issued 186 verdicts in cases of treason by hand (Article 275 of the Criminal Code), espionage (Article 276 of the Criminal Code), secret cooperation with foreigners (Article 275.1 of the Criminal Code) and providing assistance to the enemy (Article 271). This is a record for the entire observation period, according to a first-class study prepared with Parubets Analytics. On average, the courts handed down two verdicts a day, with the number reaching a historic high of 67 in July and September. At least 203 people were convicted under these charges, also more than ever before. The overwhelming number of cases still fall on the treason clause - 183 people were convicted under it. 12 people were tried on espionage charges. The article on providing aid to the enemy was used five times, and the article on secret cooperation with foreigners - three. 87 of the 203 defendants were also accused of terrorism. Charges of sabotage were present in the cases of 32 people, some of them more than doubled compared to the second quarter - from 7.1% to 15.8%. "The combination of accusations of "gross treason" and "espionage" with articles of the terrorist bloc remains a trend in the practice of repression during wartime," states the first department. The number of convictions increased for the third quarter in a row: in the first quarter there were 111, and in the second - 162. During the nine months of 2026, the total number reached 459, 487 people were convicted. This is more than in the entire year of 2025, when 458 convictions were given against 478 people - a record number in the country's modern history. Almost half of the decisions in the third quarter - 89 or 47.8% of all decisions - came from the military courts. Until the middle of 2026, "they secured the status of the central authority in cases of "state security", the first department notes. More details.
