A general HIV epidemic has been detected in 27 regions of Russia In 27 regions of Russia, the HIV epidemic has entered a general phase, said academician Vasily Akimkin, director of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrabandzur. This means that the virus not only threatens risk groups, but spreads among the general population. According to Akimkin, HIV is diagnosed in more than 1% of pregnant women in these areas. The most problematic areas include Kemerovo, Irkutsk and Sverdlovsk regions, where more than 2% of the population is infected. Among Russian men between the ages of 40 and 50, more than 3 percent have HIV, said Natalya Ladanya, a lead researcher in the Department of AIDS Prevention and Control at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rostov-on-Don. According to her data, the average age of those infected in the last 15 years has increased from 32 to 44 years, and about two-thirds of new cases of HIV transmission occur through heterosexual contact. One of the main problems is insufficient medical coverage. Ladanaya noted that only half of the people living with HIV in Russia have a suppressed viral load. This means that at least 600,000 people continue to actively participate in HIV transmission. Among patients receiving antiretroviral therapy, the viral load is suppressed by about 77-78%, while others aim for 95%, Ladanaya added. More details.
