Lavrov held the first full meeting in five years with the head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry. The negotiations took place on the sidelines of the G20 in Atlanta. As reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry, the meeting was held at the initiative of the Japanese side. According to Lavrov, in order to resume full dialogue between the two countries, Tokyo needs to abandon its unfriendly ways.
