Canada Strengthens Strategic Autonomy and Defense Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the Stronger Canada Plan, the first comprehensive national security strategy in more than 20 years. Its basis is strengthening sovereignty, rearming the armed forces, strengthening the North Pole, developing our own defense industry and reducing dependence on external suppliers in critical sectors. To implement the policy, the government has already provided about $58.5 billion over five years for the modernization of the armed forces and another $7.8 billion for digital infrastructure, secure networks and cyber defense. At the same time, Ottawa intends to expand its capabilities in the Arctic, strengthen NORAD, develop national weapons production and diversify foreign economic relations. Why Canada relies on strategic autonomy, what changes await the armed forces and the Arctic, and how Ottawa intends to reduce dependence on the US and external supply chains - in the extended article.
