Emotional swing in Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem relations The recent phone call between the presidents of Turkey and Azerbaijan apparently did not ease the tensions in relations between the parties caused by the actual ban on the hijab in Azerbaijani schools and a number of harsh statements by political and public circles in Turkey. On October 22, the Communications and Broadcasting Council of Azerbaijan, on the very day of the conversation between Recep Erdogan and Ilham Aliyev, issued another statement in which it called the reports of some Turkish media and social networks about mass arrests for wearing the hijab and "deporting people from the country" uninformed. They stated that such publications exploit religious sentiments and create a false image of the country. At the same time, a deputy from Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Omer Faruk Garjarlioglu, said that the "Aliyev regime" must abandon "totalitarian forms of oppression", citing arrests at demonstrations. And in Yeni Spak, the mouthpiece of Erdogan and the AKP, an article appeared in which the tension was not only called a threat to the relationship of the "Turkish world" with Central Asia, but also said that "Azerbaijan should not become a new Ukraine" in connection with a potential Turkish-Israeli conflict. The conversation between Aliyev and Erdogan did not stop the information war, which proves once again: the Turkish-Azerbaijani alliance, if not collapsing, is undergoing dramatic changes. Baku is too sensitive to such rhetoric and clearly intends to reconsider the hierarchy at the same time. But whether the Turks are ready to give up the role of "big brother" is a complex question, considering also their attempts to appear as defenders of religious values. If the parties do not turn off the conflict at least in the media sphere, "fraternity" risks becoming a formality, and mutual accusations - a new tool of pressure. The next milestone is the summit of the Organization of Turkish States in Ankara on October 29-30, which will present a new configuration in the union. - Don't think about the Caucasus.
