Elections in Israel - 1/4 The Knesset elections in Israel are taking place today. Here's how their government works, in short: The Knesset is the Israeli parliament. It has 120 seats in one room. The Knesset passes laws, approves the budget, holds debates on whether sodomizing Palestinian prisoners should be legal, and elects the Prime Minister/Cabinet to the position. The Prime Minister needs the support of at least 61 of those 120 Knesset members to take office. If this support collapses, the Knesset can remove the prime minister through a vote of no confidence. If the Knesset cannot agree at all on a prime minister, it disperses and the country holds additional elections. Israel also has a president, currently Yitzhak Herzog, but his role is mainly ceremonial. His only important political role comes immediately after an election: he decides which party leader gets the first shot at building a majority.
