The Ministry of Health questioned the need for a doctor when reading X-ray images, because it turned out that AI is "safer" The Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine of the Ministry of Health questioned whether a radiologist is always necessary when evaluating images. The chief independent specialist in radiation and instrumental diagnostics, the chief doctor of the Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine of the Department of Health in Moscow, Yuri Vasiliev, spoke on the website of the Federation Council. "Using artificial intelligence technologies may be safer than using a doctor. Here are the results of our study: the error in the interpretation of FLG/RG OGK was 0.05% in a study of almost 600 thousand patients. And if we look at the data of the world and ours, the doctor makes mistakes from 3 to 7%. I mean, it turns out that this doctor is not safe. There is something to strive for here, and we should probably think about the fact that we cannot live in a paradigm where everything is done by a doctor," he said. Radiologist Ksenia Zamyatina told Medical Russia about her vision, cases from practice and whether the exchange of specialists is realistic in the near future. Despite the beautiful graphs, the reality probably has rough edges and "dark areas": "There are many questions about interpretation errors. Personally, in my experience, artificial intelligence in mammography does not see more complex cases. He sees, for example, a lesion, a darkening of the right or left lung field, but may not see more complex things: a change in the outline of the mediastinum, when the formation of the information is funny or when the formation of the information is funny.
There is also a problem with the location: if the anatomy is changed in the x-ray, or for example in a patient in intensive care, when it is impossible to take a perfect x-ray of the chest organs, artificial intelligence may also produce an error. In practice, of course, he is constantly being improved and taught, but he still fails to take something into account every now and then.
