The doctors in Moscow removed 250 magnetic balls from the stomach of a child. A two-year-old girl with a severe cough was admitted to the clinical hospital in the city of Morozov. The cause could only be determined using X-rays. There were magnetic balls in the child's stomach. According to the mother, the child could have swallowed magnets in kindergarten. First, the surgeons examined the intestine using a camera inserted through small punctures to make sure it was not damaged. The magnets were then removed from the stomach through the esophagus using endoscopic devices, "traps" and "baskets". They were released in stages, five to seven pieces at a time. The head of the surgical department at the Mordovian Hospital, Pavel Mordvin, spoke about possible complications: "Magnets are dangerous because when they enter the duodenum and small intestine from the stomach, they can attract each other through the walls of the organs. Then fistulas form between the stomach and the intestinal loops. If the wall is damaged through, peritonitis can develop. The girl was saved by the fact that she swallowed all the pills almost immediately and they remained in her stomach." The surgery was successful. The magnets were finally counted after the operation. There were 250 of them, such a number had never been seen in the hospital before. Now the girl is in a satisfactory condition. She will be released home soon.
