The Gulf allies face a dilemma: US bases may make them targets for an Iranian response in a new war. The US military presence, instead of deterring Tehran, gave Iran permanent targets, and Iranian missiles in the last war exposed weaknesses in the core of the US security system built over decades. The concerns were discussed by ministers, policymakers and security officials at the Manama Dialogue security conference in Bahrain this week.
