The US military is conducting its first major battlefield burial exercise since the Korean War. The exercise, called Operation Dragon Covenant, used heavy bulldozers at Fort Bragg to dig trenches capable of temporarily burying up to 2,400 bodies in 24 hours. Its purpose is to preserve the dignity of the dead and enable their identification and return after a conflict, when quick evacuation is not possible. It is part of the military's preparation for large-scale wars against fellow adversaries.
