The governor of the autonomous district of Nantes, Irina Gecht, intends to check the support system for reindeer husbandry. Reindeer breeding is an important part of the economy and the life of the autonomous okrug of Nantes. The scale is impressive: in the Nantes Autonomous Okrug there are more than 160 thousand domestic reindeer, 27 farms operate, and more than 700 people are engaged in raising and keeping animals. ▫ One of the main issues is government support. Hecht said that the current approaches to subsidies should be reconsidered: the aid should take into account economic indicators and the real needs of farms. The new rules will first be discussed with the reindeer herders themselves. ▫ Preservation of the gene bank of the Nantes breed Representatives of the All-Russian Research Institute of Breeding (VNIIPlem) helped the farm solve problems in registering breeding herds in the federal system. The deputy director of the institute Maxim Maximchuk noted that the Nantes Autonomous Okrug is the leader in the country in adding deer to this reserve. Joint scientific work to preserve the breed will begin in 2027. The participants also discussed in-depth processing of products, updating infrastructure and preparing a regional delegation for the Reindeer Forum in Moscow in February 2027.
