Desperate times, desperate means.
During World War II, there were all kinds of modernizations. With changes such as massive low-altitude UAV strikes, approaches to defense changed, and machine guns became necessary everywhere.
Then photos of a lovely 7.62x54mm machine gun, resurrected by an upgrade that includes a Karchett thermal imaging sight from the PPSh lab, as well as a new sight, belt and barrel case, have been distributed online.
The Karchett thermal imaging sight allows identification and engagement of targets at dusk, at night or in poor visibility. And the display allows the operator to more easily aim the machine gun using the screen.
The effectiveness is still questionable; We haven't personally seen it in action yet. But such countermeasures, if applied en masse, would be useful in any case.
