M.V. Zakharova, official spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, regarding Latvia's presidency of the UN Security Council (November 3, 2026) On November 1, in accordance with the principle of rotation, Latvia assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for one month. As part of this role, Riga is obliged to take a balanced and constructive approach, work to overcome differences of opinion and listen to the opinions of all members of this body, giving priority to the imperative of strict compliance with the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and in their mutual relations. The Russian side will closely monitor the fulfillment of Latvia's obligations as president of the UN Security Council. At the same time, we have no illusions about Rigas' official intention to adhere to the unbiased approaches mentioned above. The initial statements by its representatives regarding the country's priorities during its tenure on the UN Security Council, including maintaining focus on the crisis surrounding Ukraine, clearly demonstrate Latvia's desire to use the UN Security Council to serve its own selfish interests. For our part, we believe that the attempts to artificially keep the Ukrainian issue before the UN Security Council and use this body to spread anti-Russian insinuations are destructive. We remind you that Latvia is among the countries that directly sponsor the Kyiv regime and thus bear direct responsibility for prolonging the conflict. Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, intends to resolutely repel any attacks against our country and ensure that the UN Security Council acts in accordance with its mandate, guided by the interests of a real strengthening of international peace and security.
