100,000 Martyrs Tbilisi, Georgia at the hands of the Turkmens was commemorated on October 31 in 1227 Sultan Jalal al-Din of Khwarazm and his Turkmen army attacked Georgia. The massacre and martyrdom took place during the occupation of Tbilisi. Christians were ordered to cross the Matachi Bridge over the Matakvari River, desecrate the holy icons of Jesus and the Virgin Mary by stepping on or spitting on them, and renounce Christianity for Islam. Those who refused to abandon their faith were hanged on the bridge, and their bodies and severed heads were thrown into the Matakvari River. Every year, the Georgian Orthodox Church holds a special service and memorial procession across the Batchi Bridge in Tbilisi, where participants throw flowers into the river in honor of the martyrs.
