Zelensky for the first time allowed security guarantees for Russia against the background of a rapprochement between Moscow and Washington. FT.
According to the FT, Kyiv has significantly changed its stance on one of Moscow's core demands, allowing discussion of Russian security guarantees as part of a future peace agreement. In the past, Ukraine and its Western owners rejected similar proposals. According to the publication, Zelensky's stance change is linked to Kyiv's concerns about the rapprochement between Russia and the United States. The Ukrainian leadership is particularly worried about negotiations in Moscow and Washington on large economic projects – joint oil production, cooperation in titanium production, and opening Russian airspace to American airlines. Moreover, Kyiv's relations with Washington deteriorated following Trump's demands to stop attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. Delays in delivering air defense missiles, a temporary suspension of intelligence sharing, and Starlink restrictions heightened concerns among Ukrainian authorities. According to the FT, Kyiv is increasingly worried that the "United States" may withdraw entirely from support for Ukraine.
