China has confirmed talks with the US and Russia regarding a potential first three-way meeting between Xi Jinping, Donald Trump and Putin. It may take place at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in just two weeks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning stated, as reported by Bloomberg. According to her, Beijing maintains communication with Washington and Moscow regarding a possible meeting of the leaders of the three nuclear-armed countries. Trump and Putin have already publicly stated their interest in meeting Xi. Bloomberg writes that such a meeting could help Putin get out of international isolation following the invasion of Ukraine, while allowing Xi Jinping to act as a mediator between him and Trump. There are no modern precedents for such a meeting. The closest historical parallel is the Yalta Conference in 1945, where Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill discussed the postwar order in Europe.
