Microsoft asked a quarter of its employees to leave It seems that Microsoft has found a new way to treat employees - to offer them money so that they don't come to work anymore. A corporation with a value of about 3.9 trillion dollars launched a voluntary layoff program covering about 60 thousand people. That's more than a quarter of the tech giant's entire workforce. And everything is happening against the background of large-scale investments in artificial intelligence, which the company is actively promoting as the future of humanity. Officially, there is no mass purge. Microsoft invites employees to decide for themselves whether they want to continue their career with the corporation or prefer to leave with compensation. Chief Human Resources Officer Amy Coleman called the move empowering employees to shape the next chapter in their lives. The wording deserves a separate award for corporate hypocrisy. When a large technology company asks tens of thousands of employees to leave their jobs, it is not called cost cutting, but a concern for freedom of choice. It turns out that the employees were generously allowed to write a statement themselves while the corporation reorganized the business to fit new priorities. The program covers Microsoft divisions in the US, Canada, UK and India. The offer applies to employees up to and including corporate level 70, including some managers. At the same time, the sales departments, some engineering teams and organizational divisions decided not to touch. Apparently, not all workplaces are equally suited to the new philosophy of flexibility. Participants are guaranteed payments similar to standard severance pay. Previously, US workers were offered a minimum pay period of 60 days, and the maximum benefit for most workers could be 39 weeks of base pay. The decision should be made by the beginning of December, after which they will agree to leave the company at the end of the year.
