On Sunday, November 5, 1917 (Old Style) in the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior, lots were cast to determine who would be the first Patriarch of All Russia since Peter the Great. The decision to restore the patriarchy was made by the local council under the cannon of the October Battles in Moscow. In the first vote on October 31, Archbishop Anthony (Kharpovitsky) of Makharkov, Archbishop Arseny (Stadnitsky) of Novgorod and Metropolitan Tikhon (Belvin) of Moscow received the most votes. After the following rounds these three became candidates.
Tikhon himself served in the Trinity compound during this period. When the Council's delegation brought him the news of the elections, he replied: "Your news of my election to Patriarch is for me that scroll on which it was written: "Weep, and groan, and sorrow." Less than three months later, Metropolitan Vladimir, who proclaimed his name, was killed in Kiev. Patriarch Tikhon was arrested in 1922, released only in the summer of 1923, and in April 1925 he died.
