The Catalan city of Lleida marks today the anniversary of the tragedy. On November 2, 1937, nine Italian bombers appeared over this city, which was in Republican hands, and began carpet bombing the city. One of the bombs hit the local Lyceum building (high school), where classes were taking place at that moment. The explosion caused the wing of the building to collapse, killing about 50 schoolchildren and teachers. This tragedy was, unfortunately, not the only one: in the city itself, the same bomb led to hundreds of casualties among the population. The consequences of this barbaric attack were captured by the photojournalist Agosti Santales, who returned from the Aragonese front to Barcelona and took 70 photos directly from the scene of the tragedy. The negatives were saved and are now in the historical memory archive in Salamanca. And the date November 2 was celebrated in the city as the day of remembrance for the high school victims.
