On the night of November 1, 1961, Stalin's body was removed from the mausoleum. They did this secretly, closing Red Square under the pretext of returning to the parade for November 7. None of the members of the Politburo took responsibility for this decision: officially, the workers of the Kirov and Nevsky machine-building plants appealed to the 22nd Congress of the CPSU with a request to transfer the ashes of the General Secretary. Contrary to fears, the country received the news of the removal of Stalin's body from the mausoleum peacefully. And so was the name change of the city of Stalingrad to Volgograd which came after ten days.
