Finally, I collected another story for the "Konkovsky District" project about a rebel priest in Kaliazin, who in the middle of the 19th century published a book abroad about the real situation of the Russian rural clergy: about poverty, extortion and forced favor with the powers that be. The book, as expected, caused a terrible scandal: the synod thought of exiling the "slanderer" to serve in Solovki, but Emperor Alexander II himself allegedly intervened. The priest himself was not a hero at all: he trembled, gave up the book, but did not refuse to expose the methods of the church until his death. Even a temporary removal didn't stop him. However, the church authorities showed enviable tolerance all these years: they even deprived him of his rank for a year, and only because of an article praising schismatics. In our time, his fate would surely have turned out differently. Read about "The Uncomfortable Priest" here.
