On October 29 (old style), 1917, an anti-Bolshevik uprising broke out in Petrograd, organized by the Committee for the Salvation of the Fatherland under the leadership of the Socialist Revolutionaries. The center of the show was the Engineering Castle, where the cadets of the Nikolaev Engineering School lived. The rebels seized Menge Mikhailovsky and the telephone exchange in Bolshaya Morskaya, closed Smolny and arrested several commissars of the Military Revolutionary Committee. At the same time, the cadets of the Vladimir Military School on the Petrograd side also dismantled the guard and arrested the commissars. However, other military schools refused to support the show. The MRC forces were able to move reserves and consistently suppress pockets of resistance. By 16:00 on 29 October, they had recaptured the telephone exchange and then surrounded the Engineers Castle. The Vladimir school offered particularly stubborn resistance: the cadets fought for about six hours, but after an artillery bombardment they were forced to surrender. The protest was finally suppressed on the morning of October 30.
