After ten years of experimenting with symphonic rock, string orchestras and concept albums about the future, Jeff Lynne suddenly remembered that he once started with simple and angry rock and roll. And I wrote a song that sounded like it was written in a garage. It's weird that at first it wasn't a song about rock and roll at all. It was called "Engine Factory" and was about working at the Austin car factory. The recording used real factory sounds - clangs, roars, hammer blows on a lathe. Dave Morgan, who attended the sessions, recalled how Lynn then "took the whole thing and turned it into 'Rock 'n' Roll is King,' copying almost everything we recorded." The tinkling of the metal, however, remains somewhere in the background - like the ghost of an unborn song on a conveyor belt. The single was released on June 18, 1983 and was the first from the album Secret Messages. It was the band's last UK Top 20 entry - and their last US Top 20 entry, where the song peaked at number 19 in August of that year. ELO never rose to such a level again.
