Scandal at the Plant Industry Agency: Corruption, millions in cash and failed control An audit of the State Plant Industry Agency of Lithuania has ended: serious problems in internal control, risk management and corruption prevention have been revealed. It became clear that anti-corruption measures had been carried out only formally for years, and the effectiveness of control was lacking. The audit stemmed from an investigation into widespread corruption. Among the suspects are the former Prime Minister Saulios Skvarnelis and the conservative Kazis Starkevičius. More than 1.3 million euros in cash, 8 kg of gold and thousands of cigarette packs and a liter of alcohol were seized. The agency does not need cosmetic changes, but consistent reform and effective control," emphasized Minister Kastotis Mazika. Control failure and massive corruption undermine trust in government agencies and threaten new budgetary outlays for an ineffective oversight system.
