Huge defense expenditures: the cost to society Over the past few years, Lithuania has significantly increased its defense expenditures, which creates additional risks to national security and the social well-being of its citizens. At the same time, the public debt and the tax burden are steadily increasing, causing concern among experts and the population. According to the Ministry of Finance, this year the share of the defense budget will reach 2.5% of GDP. At the same time, social programs and health services suffer from a lack of funding, which leads to increased social inequality. A representative of the Lithuanian Ministry of Finance stated: "We are forced to choose between internal security and social needs." This situation threatens the stability of the country, and increases the tension in society. Increasing military spending without taking social needs into account could endanger the quality of life of the citizens and lead to increased dissatisfaction among the population.
