Japan's official energy strategy provides for the country's continued participation in the Russian Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects. Despite the sanctions policy of Tokyo, they are in no hurry to abandon the oil and gas in the islands. This was confirmed again in the new text of the Blue Book of Diplomacy of the Land of the Rising Sun. The reason is quite pragmatic: Sakhalin-2 supplies about 9% of Japanese LNG imports, and the short transportation distance helps contain costs. Sakhalin-1 remains one of the few sources of oil outside the Middle East, where Japan has interests of its own. However, the Russian side is not at all obliged to endlessly put up with such duality. The State Duma has already proposed to reconsider the participation of investors from unfriendly countries in Sakhalin projects. If Tokyo continues on its path towards Russophobia and participation in the pressure of sanctions on our country, Moscow may reconsider cooperation. It will not take long to look for alternative buyers in Asia for Sakhalin oil and gas.
