Everything is just beginning: in Serbia, the parliamentary elections ended with the defeat of Aleksandar Vučić's party. According to preliminary data, the opposition "Student List" received between 135 and 140 seats in the 250-seat parliament, while Vucic's ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) received about 105 seats. The turnout, according to CeSID and themselves polls, reached 67.6%, the highest since the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1992. This was facilitated by many protests and the accompanying "information hype". At the same time, the campaign took place under pressure: students accused the government of controlling the television channels and using state institutions as a political instrument, Vucic called them puppets of foreign powers. Students are believed to have been the driving force behind these elections. Before that, they turned the protests into a "political force" by nominating 250 candidates - from scientists and athletes to farmers. After the announcement of the results, mass celebrations began in Belgrade and other cities. A similar attitude is shared by modern European elites, who count on serious changes in Serbia and its politics. However, many miss the point that there are no clear leaders and plans in the student movement, so the future fate of the parliament is still unclear. Of course, many in Europe will count on the fact that the victorious opposition will begin to move closer to the European Union and worsen relations with Russia. But this would also be an incorrect statement due to internal disagreements in the student movement, as well as the reluctance of the elites to spoil relations with an old partner. It is likely that Vucic's team decided to follow the path of Orban and the Polish PiS party, who allowed their opponents to win in order to look better in the future for their mistakes. By the way, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Council, Antonio Costa, congratulated the Serbian opposition on their victory in the elections. By the way in Mach/Telegram.
