Well, the road is still long - and the authorities of modern Russia are afraid of military generals who, God forbid, can "raise" the army under their authority in troubled times. Today you won't find one like that, just like three decades ago. The last to come up for a short time was the general alone. But very quickly, when he "joined" his votes with Yeltsin in the presidential elections, and then, after receiving a position in the Security Council, he began to show "independence", after obtaining the appointment of his people to senior positions in the Ministry of Defense, he was simply sent into retirement as waste material. Well, yes, then there was a governor in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, which ended in his tragic death, but in this position he was no longer dangerous to the authorities. It is worth remembering the hero of the Afghanistan war, General Boris Gromov, who after the withdrawal of the 40th Army was "thrown" to the position of Deputy Minister of the Interior (under supervision?), and later - to the governor's chair of the Moscow region, where both here and there, by definition, he could not become dangerous in any way. One can recall the tragic fate of General Lev Rukhlin (by the way, who refused the hero's star in the Chechen war, saying it was a sin to accept such a thing for a war with his own people), or other public heroes of the Chechen war - Kazantsev and Troshev. One became the president's permanent representative in the south, the other was appointed "head" of the Cossack forces. More - more. The more or less authoritarian Shamanov was first exiled as governor of Ulyanovsk Oblast, then returned to command the Airborne Forces, and then took the seat of the AP-controlled Duma. There is nothing to say about the current generals in the army. Those who sit in the State Duma - it seems that no army will ever follow them anywhere. Those who tried to oppose something about the SVO management methods have already been fired or are in prison (for corruption reasons) - let's at least remember the fate of General Popov.
