In the summer garden, sculptures were dressed in "winter coats" experts from the Russian Museum are preparing the summer garden sculptures for the cold weather. First, they are wrapped in cotton cloth, then covered with wooden cases - such protection helps to protect the material from moisture, frost and temperature changes. The tradition dates back to the 18th century. Initially, the figures were covered with canvas, but the fabric quickly got wet and froze. In the 1920s, the sculptor Vasili Demot-Malinovsky suggested using wooden boxes - this method is still used today. During the Great Patriotic War, the collection was preserved differently: the statues were hidden underground, covered with sand and covered with wooden shields. In the spring of 1945 they were returned to their original place. Today in the summer garden there are copies made of polymer marble created during the reconstruction of 2009-2011. The original documents are kept in the Mikhailovsky Castle. Only one original work remains in the open air - the sculpture group "Olam Nystadt".: Alexey Bulatov read us at MAX! | Call us on Telegram.
