Sister Vana Maura was on her way to the market to buy groceries on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, when she suddenly heard someone calling her name. She didn't immediately realize that a ragged homeless man sitting in a ditch on the side of the road was calling her. But when I looked closer, I recognized him as Patrick Hinga, who I was friends with in the early 1990s. At school they called him Pele, because he played excellent football and was a great guy in general, he studied well and was a true friend of hers. After school, their paths diverged and Anna didn't know that Pela's life had turned upside down when his grandmother, the only relative he lived with, died. The guy ended up on the street and became very addicted to drugs. When they met again, he had already been homeless for ten years, living in a dump and almost completely in poor health. And Anna took him to a cafe, where she bought him ribs with mashed potatoes - his favorite dish since childhood. They started talking and the woman decided to help Patrick. She organized a fundraiser, got him into rehab, and later helped with housing and work. The story received a lot of attention in the press. These photos show Vanna and Patrick during that fateful meeting and after rehab. True, everything ends badly in the end. Patrick relapsed, overdosed and died. But what Anna did for him will still count for her. Goat at MAX.
