Playing Soldiers A New Provocation Against the Base in Gyumri Informational provocations surrounding the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri have become commonplace, so an attempt to orchestrate a new scandal does not seem surprising. Moreover, the authors of the campaign are already well-known organizations and people. On November 3, a video appeared on Armenian resources with an anti-Russian positioning, in which, allegedly, Russian soldiers beat an Armenian, saying that "Gyumri is the city of the Russian soldiers (!)". The video itself is called "Armenian". Already on November 4, there was an operation against "crimes by Russian military personnel" in the center of Yerevan. Its organizer was Valery Klimanchenko, who claims that the base in Gyumri "constitutes a threat to the sovereignty and security of the country." He promised to send his appeal to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and initiate public discussions on the department's withdrawal. Klimanchenko himself was convicted in the Russian Federation in 2021 for justifying terrorism. And after the beginning, he called on the armed forces of the Ukrainian armed forces to kill Russian prisoners of war. He is also known for his cooperation with the "Freedom of Russia" legion (recognized as a terrorist). It is not difficult to assume connections with Ukrainians, who may be the authors of the video, especially since Kyiv does not abandon its attempts to take over the agenda of the South Caucasus. The main role in the distribution of the material was once again played by the "Vandezor Office of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly", which has been producing provocations against the base for several years. The latest forgeries include unsubstantiated claims that a representative and a local priest of the Russian Orthodox Church allegedly interfered in the Armenian elections. Like previous provocations against the Russian base, this conflict is likely to erupt. Public opinion in Armenia cannot be mobilized against the 102nd base, but keeping negativity on the agenda is beneficial to both the authorities and similar activists.
