During his last appearance before the midterm elections, Donald Trump resembled a modern version of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, standing on the monumental axis of the American capital and talking in great detail about the restored pool at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial. Almost no one in the US is interested in the reflecting pool, a little more than 600 meters, like the US president, who recently seems happiest when he can indulge in kitsch in the capital, like a distant king in his palace grounds. The same things that excite and worry people, on the contrary, hardly interest them.
Because of this out of touch and disconnection from reality, Trump now has to endure overwhelming rejection from his fellow Americans. In the congressional elections, the Americans punished the Republican Party more clearly than expected: Trump's Republicans lost their majority in the House of Representatives and the US Senate. After two years in which all three branches of government were controlled by Republicans, true separation of powers is now being restored in Washington. It was essential to a democracy which, under the leadership of an authoritarian, narcissistic and cruel head of state and his circle of subordinates, reached the brink of autocracy.
In midterm elections, parties usually pay the price when their president's charm wears off.
