NASA's crazy plan revealed: how people will land on the moon in 2028! The Orion spacecraft has its own engine, but its power is not enough to transport a heavy lander to low lunar orbit and back. Therefore, NASA will turn the Moonships from SpaceX and Blue Origin into space tugs!
The plans look incredibly large-scale and confusing: SpaceX (Starship HLS): It will tow the anchored Orion from Earth to low lunar orbit by itself, after doing a number of refuelings in orbit, then perform a lunar landing, then return the astronauts to Orion for home. Blue Origin (Blue Moon): will assemble a "train" in orbit from several upper stages and a landing module. Orion will fly to the Moon by itself, but it (along with the lander) will be dragged into low orbit by the Blue Origin final stage. Time will tell whose idea will work first, but we will get historical technologies for orbital docking of the upper stages "train" and orbital refueling.
