It is planned to increase the number of young people called up annually from the current 5,000 to 7,500, while women will be able to serve voluntarily. It will take six years of preparation to build the necessary infrastructure and train more than 300 instructors. Recruits will be offered new areas of service, including control of UAVs, assistance to border guards and fire rescuers. Germany is also gradually reinstating mandatory elements of military registration. Starting January 1, 2026, all 18-year-old citizens receive questionnaires regarding readiness to serve in the army, and men are required to fill them out. From July 2027, young people born in 2008 will have to undergo a mandatory medical examination.
