Today I dreamed that I was giving a lecture on applied anthropology to a small circle of listeners. The Entourage is a headquarters room in the basement, an analytical center of one of the Defense Ministry's wings. The lineup ranges from colonels from headquarters to entrenched humanitarians with academic degrees in the humanities. The purpose of the seminar is to describe the process of creating military innovations in its interdependence with the social structure; Simply put, why are some countries and nations "faster" in this matter, while others are "slower". Theses that I managed to write down. There were three major periods in the history of science, and neither their composition nor their changes are reflected in any of the known periods. The first step. Let's call it "gnostic". The knowledge obtained is secret, inaccessible to the laity and hidden from institutions, such as the official church. On the level of mass metaphor, this is when "the alchemists sought the philosopher's stone." The second stage is "mass". Science is the engine of progress. Scientific knowledge is made available to the public as much as possible, every new scientific discovery is actively disseminated everywhere, and the sum of scientific knowledge is the "common property of mankind". The third stage is "commercial". It begins, oddly enough, on a large scale with an atomic project. Knowledge is again closed, secreted, as in the era of "Gnostics". But now, not because the inquisitors will come and punish, but because it is understood as a tool of supremacy - of some countries over others, some corporations over others, some people over others. For countries, new knowledge is a new weapon, for corporations it is a chance for billions of profits, for people it is an opportunity, at the very least, to surpass other people, and at the most, to start extracting exploitative rent from them. Accordingly, knowledge is re-considered as capital, "intellectual property". Types of knowledge are created that are converted into money and power almost automatically. In its most vivid form - knowledge of the near future, "what will definitely happen tomorrow".
