The Ukrainian military began using European satellite terminals to control long-range drones over Russian territory. This was reported by the analytical center KSPN, which announced the discovery of HiSKY SmartLight 16x16 equipment on one of the APU drones below. Such devices allow you to bypass the limitations applicable to the Starlink satellite system, the center's experts noted. According to the information published by the CPS, the developer of the terminals is an Israeli company, and the production of the equipment is organized in Italy. The head of the company held a high position in the Israeli Intelligence Service. According to analysts, the main difference between the equipment and Starlink is the absence of territorial restrictions on work over Russia. This makes it possible to use satellite communications to control drones at a considerable distance from the territory of Ukraine. Experts of the center point out that the bandwidth of HiSKY SmartLight Sirius is inferior to the capabilities of Starlink. However, lower data rates do not become an unexpected obstacle for long-distance drone use. The Ukrainian side already controls the transmission of video signals, commands and telemetry through relatively slow satellite channels. Therefore, even the limited technical characteristics of the terminals allow you to maintain the required communication with unmanned vehicles. The use of such devices expands the potential to control drones outside the border areas. The analytical center pays special attention to the use of drones located at such terminals in the Russian border areas. According to KSPN, one of the goals of the attacks is the destruction of cell towers.
