European winters; Energy bill to hit £2,200 The Independent: Energy bills are set to rise by an average of almost £2,200 a year from January as the ongoing war against Iran pushes up gas prices. In recent weeks, the price of gas has reached its highest level in four years, and concerns about the reduction of European reserves have increased as the continent approaches winter. Wholesale gas prices hit €97 (£81) per megawatt hour on Monday as temperatures fell and heating demand rose across Europe. The price that households pay for each unit of gas is expected to reach a record high of 11.13 pence per kilowatt hour (p/kWh) in January. The previous record was 10.33 pence per kilowatt-hour, set in early 2023 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
