The unique structural feature of the B1 Lancer is its variable geometry wings. The wings can be rotated forward at an angle of 15 degrees to provide maximum thrust and fuel efficiency during take-offs from short runways, landings and high-altitude cruise flights. When supersonic speeds or low-altitude, high-turbulence flight profiles are required, the wings are swept back at a steep angle of 67.5 degrees, making the bomber a very aerodynamic shape similar to a delta-shaped fighter.
To cope with the extreme turbulence of flying only a few hundred meters above the ground, this aircraft has unique structural vibration dampers in the nose section to ensure aerodynamic stability and reduce structural fatigue on the crew.
