According to The Times, three of Britain's four Vanguard-class nuclear submarines are now at sea at the same time, an unusual deployment not seen more than five years ago. At least one of the submarines is carrying Trident ballistic missiles, which are equipped with nuclear warheads, while the other two appear to be conducting sea trials or preparing for operations. A fourth submarine is now at Devonport undergoing repairs. Naval sources described the deployment as unusual, but suggested it reflected the Royal Navy's improved operational readiness, rather than a deliberate signal to Russia.
