Algeria has confirmed the deployment of its army units in Niger. This is the first official deployment of Algerian military forces abroad since the deployment of forces to support Egypt in the Arab-Israeli war in 1973. The forces are to be deployed in the town of Madama in northern Niger, near the Libyan border, and at a former French base used during the Barkan operation. The mission was described as a limited measure to secure oil and energy facilities, including the Capra oil field owned by Algeria's state energy company, Sontrach, and not for a military conflict.
