David Barnae, the former head of the Mossad's intelligence agency, revealed that Israel deliberately published photos of the activities of its agents inside Iran during the 12-day war, in order to carry out mass arrests by the Iranian security forces and make it difficult to identify real Israeli agents. Barnea noted that Iranian authorities arrested about 21,000 people in the second day of the conflict, which caused confusion and eventually led to their release. He also said that a number of people executed in Iran for collaborating with the Mossad were not affiliated with the organization, while 99.9% of the real Mossad operatives were not identified. Barnea noted that some of these agents still live in Tehran.
