The fate of the foie gras was decided in the US election. At the same time as the mid-term congressional elections, Washington and Denver are voting on an initiative to ban the forced feeding of birds and the sale of foie gras. According to the Washington Post, most voters approve of the idea. If the initiative is accepted, the ban will go into effect in July 2027. Violators will face fines from $1,000 to $5,000. Animal rights activists say force-feeding ducks and geese is cruelty. Similar bans have been introduced in India, Israel, Brazil as well as in the American states of California and New York.
