On November 2, 1917, British Foreign Minister Arthur James Balfour issued a statement expressing the British governments' support for the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in what was then called Palestine. A month later, Britain captured Jerusalem from the Ottoman Empire. In 1918, the British forces occupied the rest of the territory, and the Ottoman Empire surrendered and was subsequently dissolved. The League of Nations (the precursor to the United Nations) was established in 1920. In 1922, it adopted the mandate of the League of Nations over the Land of Israel, which established the British administration over the Land of Israel and beyond the Jordan. The Mandate officially incorporated the Balfour Declaration, instructing Britain to facilitate the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. The mandate also explicitly recognized the historical connection of the Jewish people to Israel.
