The Ramsar Convention, which was created with the aim of protecting wetlands and their wise use, was approved on February 2, 1971 in the city of Ramsar and raised the name of this city at the international level. Today, 172 countries are members of this convention, and over 2,500 wetlands in the member countries have been registered in the list of wetlands of international importance. Although the convention's secretariat is located in Bloeta, Switzerland, Ramsar is still considered the origin of this international convention; A role that gained an additional role in the following decades with the establishment of the regional center of the Ramsar Convention in this city.
