The development of pipelines and the strengthening of alternative export routes by some of the countries in the region, while reducing some of their dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, cannot eliminate the position of this waterway in world trade, because this strait is not the only route through which oil passes, and it is still considered one of the most important bottlenecks in the world.

Official energy reports show that most of Iraq's oil exports are still made from the country's southern terminals in the Persian Gulf. In 2024, more than 3.2 million barrels of Iraqi oil per day will be exported from the southern sea lanes. This figure shows that even for Iraq, the northern routes were not able to fully take over the role of the southern route.
