The stalling of the price of diesel in most places in England at 199.9 pence, just behind the psychological limit of two pounds, is the outward appearance of a deeper crisis that has passed through car tanks while at the same time putting pressure on gas and electricity bills, commodity prices, inflation, interest rates, the government's energy budget and political strife on the country.

The increase in the price of diesel may at first glance seem like a limited development in the road fuel market, but the number that can be seen on the billboard is actually a warning sign of a series of interrelated pressures.

Each jump in the price of fuel increases the cost of transporting passengers and goods, transfers it to transport rates and food prices, and ultimately reduces the purchasing power of households. Therefore, the difference between a tenth of a penny and two pounds cannot be considered just a daily fluctuation in the gasoline and diesel market.
