The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been announced
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Francis Halzen for "crucial contributions to the iCube neutrino observatory and the discovery of energetic neutrinos of astrophysical origin".
The iCube observatory became operational in 2010 and in 2013 it was able to detect the first high-energy cosmic neutrinos arriving from outside the Milky Way galaxy. This discovery opened completely new doors to the study of extreme cosmic phenomena such as black holes and supernovae.
