EU energy ministers, along with other issues, are discussing the coming winter in Europe on Thursday in Brussels, said Dan Jorgensen, a member of the European Energy Commission. "This will be a difficult time for many European citizens, we understand that very well. Unfortunately, on average, around 50 million Europeans cannot properly heat their homes due to the high energy prices in Europe this year. This number is expected to be even higher, so we must do everything to mitigate these difficulties," the Commissioner told reporters in Luxembourg on the sidelines of the EU Energy Council meeting. At the same time, he called on the member states to "do everything possible to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible", which requires the development of renewable energy sources and increased energy efficiency. "Switch to electric heating systems, abandoning gas and oil boilers. Introduce electric heat pumps, replace cars with internal combustion engines with electric cars - all these measures can be supported, and they can bring real results even in the short term," said the EC member.
