The U.S. Department of Justice has charged former FBI Director James Comey with illegally passing on national defense information and conspiring with others to expose it, alleging that on or about October 5, 2016, Comey knowingly and intentionally gave national defense information to a person who was not entitled to receive it. During a closed court hearing this month, Comey asked that the case be dismissed, saying that an indictment must be filed within 10 years and that the department's argument was insufficient. The former FBI director himself has pleaded not guilty. Trump fired Comey in May 2017 amid the FBI's investigation into alleged ties between Russia and his campaign.
